Cataract surgery is a simple surgical procedure to remove lens fog in the eye with cataracts and replace it with a clear artificial eye lens. This implantable eyepiece replacement aims to improve the visual acuity of the eye. Here are the types of implanted lenses you need to know before entering the operating room.
A wide selection of implanted eye lenses used in cataract surgery
The implanted eyepiece is generally made of silicone or acrylic which is then coated with a special material to ward off UV rays. There are 4 types of implanted lenses that can be used according to the needs of each patient. Here's the explanation:
1. Monofocal lens
Monofocal lenses are the most common and traditional type of implanted lens. This lens has only one focus - focus near, medium or far depending on the patient's preference. Generally, this type of lens is chosen to help focus over long distances. Close-up focus, such as when reading, will be assisted by using reading glasses.
This type of lens is also the best type of lens when users often drive at night because it has a less glare effect than other types of lenses.
2. Multifocal lens
This lens has two focus points, namely close focus and remote focus. This lens is designed in such a way that the brain can select the appropriate focus point for the desired vision. Multifocal lenses are much more expensive than monofocals.
3. The lens is accommodating
The need for the best vision in all situations led to the creation of accommodating lenses. This lens is specially made to be able to connect with the ciliary muscle (eye muscle that regulates the ability to bulge and flatten the eye lens) so that the lens can move forward or backward to adjust focus based on the location of the object.
Relaxation of the ciliary muscles will cause the lens to move backwards and improve distance vision. Conversely, contraction of the ciliary muscles will cause the lens to move forward and aid for near vision.
4. Toric lens
Unlike other types of lenses that help to overcome the minus and pluses of the eye, this type of lens is intended to treat cylindrical eyes (astigmatism). The use of toric lenses provides the best results in overcoming astigmatism compared to various other techniques, such as reducing the area of the operation or the limbal relaxing incision method.
What to consider before choosing implanted eyepiece
In the end, the choice of implanted eyepiece depends back on the condition of the initial eye health, your needs, and also the costs you have.
It is undeniable that cost must be one of the considerations in choosing a lens because the more sophisticated the type of implanted lens to be used, the greater the cost.
These matters should be discussed further with the ophthalmologist who will perform your operation in order to get the best outcome.
