Whatever the cause, vomiting can lead to dehydration and hunger because all of the contents of your stomach have been drained. So after vomiting, is it okay to eat as usual again or are there special eating rules?
What to eat after vomiting?
Doctors and health professionals advise you not to eat immediately after vomiting. The goal is to give the stomach a short break after draining all of its contents. So, don't eat or drink anything for a few hours after vomiting.
After a few hours, you can eat and drink…
Water
Drinking lots of water can help replenish lost body fluids after vomiting. This can prevent dehydration, which is the most common complication of vomiting.
Liquids that you can drink are plain water, broth soup, fruit juice diluted with water, or plain tea. Adults who are vomiting also drink isotonic drinks.
Pure fruit juices, milk, and most other sugary drinks are not recommended because sugar can cause cramps or diarrhea.
ORS
If the vomiting is severe to the point of dehydration, adults and children can drink ORS to replenish fluids as well as balance electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and bicarbonates, which are important for the body.
ORS is especially important for children and is highly recommended because complications of dehydration occur more quickly in children.
American Family Physician recommends that children drink the ORS solution 10-60 minutes after vomiting. Except for babies who are exclusively breastfed or use formula milk.
Soft food
After you stop vomiting and drink enough water, you are allowed to eat. However, choose foods that are soft textured such as bananas, steamed rice, or bread. These foods are also low in fiber and starchy to "bind" the food so that the stool becomes solid.
Apart from rice, bread, and bananas, you can also eat broth soup, boiled potatoes, oatmeal, or whole wheat crackers.
These foods also replace the nutrients lost after vomiting, for example, bananas that contain potassium and potatoes or oatmeal which are high in carbohydrates.
As your body's condition improves, you can gradually return to your normal diet, including fruits and vegetables.
