Many are still confused about the right time to take vitamins during fasting, whether at dawn or breaking the fast. Are there certain recommendations and rules for taking vitamins during Ramadan?

Why does the body need to drink vitamins when fasting?

Drinking vitamins when fasting is considered important enough to meet the needs of minerals and vitamins when the body stops eating and drinking for a while. Not all vitamins work in your body at the same time. Therefore, it is better if you know the rules and when to take vitamins, especially when fasting with limited eating hours.

The following is a guide to knowing the types of vitamins and the right time to take them during fasting:

Fat-soluble vitamins, better consumed after breaking the fast

Previously, there were two common types of vitamins that were fat-soluble and water-soluble. Well, for vitamins or health supplements that are fat-soluble types, it's best to consume them after you break your fast.

When breaking the fast or dinner is the optimal time to consume fat soluble vitamins.

Fat-soluble vitamins, will be dissolved in our bodies by using fat from food in the body. Then, the vitamin content is carried into the bloodstream to maximize their respective functions.

Examples of fat-soluble vitamins that can be consumed at night include vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin E, and vitamin D.

When our bodies get fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are stored in the liver. Therefore, these vitamins are best consumed with foods that contain unsaturated fats or contain oils to aid in maximum absorption of function.

Water-soluble vitamins, better consumed at dawn

For types of water-soluble vitamins, it is better to consume them at dawn. At a minimum, you can eat it 30 minutes before eating or 1 hour after eating sahur. This is due to the best absorption times of water-soluble vitamins when the stomach is still empty.

Water-soluble vitamins are usually easily digested by the body with daily drinks and food. Examples include vitamin C, vitamin B, and folate (folic acid), which are soluble in water.

Your body needs the amount of vitamins it needs to get rid of the residue of urine that still settles in the body. Because your body doesn't store vitamins for a long time, they will also pass out with the urine over time.

For this type of vitamin, it's a good idea to consume it at dawn to launch your activities during the fasting month. For example, you can take B vitamins before eating a meal.

Vitamin B is a type of vitamin that increases energy and functions to reduce stress levels. Some of the most commonly consumed B vitamins are B-2, B-6, and B-12. It has also been clinically proven that B vitamins can reduce the amount of stress and improve your daily mood.

Tips for drinking vitamins while fasting

  • The most common side effects that people experience when taking vitamins are nausea, mild diarrhea and a sense of discomfort in the stomach. To help reduce discomfort and limit side effects, most vitamin manufacturers recommend that supplements are mixed or taken with food.
  • Some people overdose on vitamins and they have certain side effects. For example, it is not advisable to take vitamin K with blood thinning supplements or warfarin, because the body will have an adverse reaction.
  • Even though you are the rules and recommendations recommended by vitamin drug manufacturers, it never hurts to consult your doctor again. Moreover, the body's biological functions will be different during the fasting month. So maybe you will need an adjustment and a doctor's recommendation to take certain vitamins.
