Feelings of disgust tend to arise when avoiding something dirty (dirty) or causing disease in the environment. For example, if you saw a mound of trash, you would definitely try to cover your nose or look away; as far as possible you will avoid it. However, you may have noticed that in society, women are more synonymous with clean things while men are actually known as the dirtier figures. Are women really cleaner? Check out the answer here.
Cleanliness begins with a feeling of disgust
Disgust is a part of human psychology to protect from something that is annoying, causes disease, and something that is not liked. This feeling arises when it comes to things that are dirty, such as vomit, dirt, rotten food, and many more.
This feeling of disgust is the determinant and guide of one's hygiene behavior. The point is, the easier it is for you to feel disgusted, of course you will be more diligent in maintaining personal and environmental hygiene.
Research shows that men are more dirty than women
Reporting from Medical Daily, an experiment conducted by dr. Chris van Tulleken revealed that 99 percent of women wash their hands after using the toilet while only 77 percent of men. Then, an article was published on Washingtonian reports that 90 offices in the United States find that men have more bacteria on their desks, computers, and chairs than women. Researchers concluded that men carried 10 percent more bacteria. This may be because they wash their hands and brush their teeth less often than women.
Dr. Chris also concluded that there are more bacteria in the armpits of men than women, so that their bodies smell worse when they sweat. However, a study at the University of Arizona concluded that in women's toilets, germs were twice as common. This happens because usually women bring their children into their bathrooms and women clean themselves more in the bathroom so that more germs are left there.
Why do women tend to be cleaner than men?
Reporting from Psychology Today, there are several reasons why women are cleaner than men. First, many women tend not to want to work in dirty places, for example working in a sewage treatment plant or a workshop. Some women are reluctant to be contaminated with dirt, insects, or do work that is more prone to causing injury to their bodies than some men.
Women also find it easier to feel nauseous about something they don't like, for example during pregnancy. Nausea when pregnant is one symptom morning sickness as a way to protect yourself and the fetus from pathogens (germs).
Then, after becoming a mother, usually women will pay more attention to the cleanliness of their children than their fathers. The mother is in charge of preparing food, which can be a medium for transferring pathogens from mother to child. In addition, mothers also have more time to interact with children than their fathers. This is why women end up paying more attention to personal and environmental hygiene than men who get the dirty label.
Not to mention that society has emphasized the importance of cleanliness for women, even since they were children. It actually has nothing to do with the biology or physiology of the female body. But more to social norms. In fact, physiologically, of course, cleanliness is equally important for men and women.
Gender is not a benchmark for personal and environmental hygiene
Regardless of woman or man, each person has a different sensitivity to feeling disgusted. The higher the feeling of disgust, the more likely it is that the environment you are in is cleaner. If you are aware of the importance of health, you will better maintain the cleanliness of yourself and the environment around you to avoid various diseases.
The above studies are of course limited and can only describe a part of society. In the end, who is the question who is the dirtier it can only be answered by each of you. Have you kept yourself and your environment clean properly?
