What is the drug Sufentanil used for?

Sufentanil is a drug used for anesthesia before undergoing surgery. It is also used with other drugs as part of an epidural anesthetic during the birth process to reduce pain.

Sufentanil is a narcotic (opioid) analgesic. These drugs act on the brain and nervous system to produce anesthesia and reduce pain.

How do I store Sufentanil?

This medication is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Don't freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. Observe the storage instructions on the product package or ask your pharmacist. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Do not flush medicines down the toilet or down the drain unless instructed to do so. Discard this product when it has expired or when it is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of your product.

Side effects

What are the possible side effects of Sufentanil?

• Worry; confusion; constipation; difficulty walking; dizzy; sleepy; dry mouth; headache; indigation; itchy; nausea; gag

Seek medical help immediately if you experience severe side effects such as the following:

• Severe allergic reaction (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); hallucinations; muscle stiffness; seizures; slow or irregular heartbeat; breathe slowly; breathing problems; limp.

Drug Interactions

What medicines can interfere with the drug Sufentanil?

Although several drugs should not be used at the same time, in other cases 2 different types of drugs may be used simultaneously although there is a possibility of interactions. In this case, your doctor may change the dose, or other prescription as needed. Tell your healthcare professional if you are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs.

Tell your health care provider if you are taking other drugs, especially:

• Naltrexone due to the effectiveness of sufentanil will be reduced
• Amiodarone, azole antifungals (eg, fluconazole), beta-blockers (eg, propranolol), benzodiazepines (eg, alprazolam), calcium channel blockers (eg, verapamil), cimetidine, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (eg, phenelzine), phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine), sibutramine, or sodium oxybate (GHB) because the risk of side effects is increased
• Barbiturate anesthetics (eg, thiopental), benzodiazepines (eg, alprazolam), sibutramine, or sodium oxybate (GHB) as reactions and side effects of these drugs will increase

Can certain foods and drinks interfere with the work of the drug Sufentanil?

Certain drugs should not be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Discuss your use of drugs with food, alcohol, or tobacco with your health care provider.

What health conditions can interfere with the performance of the drug Sufentanil?

Any other health conditions you have can affect the use of this drug. Always tell your doctor if you have other health problems, especially:

• Diabetes
• Asthma or other breathing problems
• Fever
• Increased pressure or unusual growth on the brain

What is the dosage of Sufentanil for adults?

Sufentanil dosage should be differentiated in each individual case according to body weight, physical status, pathological condition, use of other drugs, and type of surgical and anesthetic procedures. In obese patients (more than 20% have a weight over ideal body weight), the dose of sufentanil should be based on body weight. The dose should be reduced in the elderly and debilitated patients.

What to do in an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (118/119) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.

What should I do if I forget to take medicine or forget to take medicine?

If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
