"Can you read the letters on the first line?" These questions are the things you will hear when doing an eye exam, whether it's at a specialist or in optic glasses. However, did you know that there are many types of cards with the letters written on them? Yes, in fact there are many kinds of cards specially made for eye examinations.
A variety of special cards for eye examinations
1. The Snellen Card
The Snellen card is the type of card most often used in eye examinations. You can find this card at health care centers, and there is even a card on every optic that sells glasses.
Although it is still referred to as a Snellen card, the times have made this card no longer in the form of a sheet of paper. Often these cards are already a projection of a card image that is fired by the projector onto the screen.
There are two types of Snellen cards, one containing letters and the other containing numbers. This is so that you cannot remember numbers or letters that have been read before.
To assess eye acuity, you are asked to read the snellen card from a predetermined distance. Starting from the largest letter or number in the top row, down to the smaller one.
If your eyesight is fine, then you will be able to read the Snellen card down to the very bottom line, which is the smallest letter or number size. However, if you have stopped in the middle of the line, you may have certain health problems.
2. Card E
Well, eye examinations for preschoolers are different from adults. To find out your little one's visual acuity, usually an E card will be used. This is to find out if your little one has farsightedness or farsightedness?
This card only contains the letter E with various sizes, similar to the Snellen card. The difference with the Snellen card, your little one is not asked to read the card, because most of them are not good at reading or recognizing letters. So, your little one will be asked to show the direction of the three feet contained in the letter E.
3. ETDRS card
Unlike Snellen cards, which are easily found anywhere, ETDRS cards can generally only be found at an ophthalmologist. This card is used to check visual acuity in adults. You could say that the eye examination with this card is more accurate than the Snellen card. This is because, on the ETDRS card:
- Each line has the same number of letters or numbers
- The distance between letters or numbers on each line is the same
- The spacing between letters or numbers on different lines is the same
- The level of difficulty in reading the letters or numbers contained in each line is the same
4. Jaeger card
Unlike other types of cards that are useful for measuring visual acuity from a distance, the Jaeger card is a card used for measuring near-distance visual acuity.
This card is read within 30 cm, a good and correct reading distance. Each line on this card contains a sentence, not a single letter or number like the other cards, and visual acuity assessments can be done without the need to close one eye first.
