Foods that do not spoil easily are very useful to someone who needs food to survive. In fact, they don't seem to need an expiration date that much, so you shouldn't worry if you forget to check the date on the label. There are at least 10 foods that can last for years, as follows.

Foods that do not spoil easily

1. White rice

Not all rice is created equal. You may think that both white and brown rice can last a long time. However, this thought is wrong, because the oil in the layer of brown rice bran makes rice only last for 6 months. Meanwhile, white rice can last up to 30 years when stored in an airtight box with temperatures below 15 ° C.

2. Honey

Honey is said to be the only food that really lasts forever thanks to the magic chemicals produced by bees. The nectar from flowers mixes with enzymes in the bees' bodies. Bees change the composition of the nectar and group it into simple sugars which are deposited into the hive. The bee wiping and the enzymes in its stomach can create a liquid that is very acidic and low in humidity, which is safe for bacterial growth.

The processing and wrapping of honey further adds to the life of these non-perishable foods. Even though it has low humidity, honey sugar is hygroscopic, which means it picks up moisture from the air. When honey is properly heated and sealed, moisture will not be absorbed, and the honey will last forever. The oldest jar of honey is 5,500 years old.

3. Salt

Given that sodium chloride is a mineral extracted from the earth, the resistance of this food should come as no surprise. Salt has been used for centuries as a means of preserving other foods or even the bodies of living things, because it removes moisture. However, table salt may not last forever, but can only last about 5 years, because of the iodine contained in it.

4. Soy sauce

This is another non-perishable food. The durability of soy sauce is debatable depending on what is added to it. However, even after opening, soy sauce will last for years in the refrigerator.

5. Sugar

As with all non-perishable foods, the method of storing the sugar will determine whether you can store it forever. Powdered sugar and granulated sugar hold up best if stored in an airtight container to keep moisture out. Producers were asked to mark an expiration date on sugar packs, but producers said, "even brown sugar that has thawed can be eaten once it has softened."

6. Dry beans

Researchers from Brigham Young University found that after 30 years, the overall quality of the dried beans decreased, but was considered acceptable for consumption in emergency situations by at least 80% of the consumer panelists. Also, protein digestibility has been found to remain stable over time.

7. Pure maple syrup

A Utah State University emergency food supply guide describes pure maple syrup along with other commercial sugars (such as honey and granular sugars), as having an unlimited shelf life, due to the resistance of these foods to microbes and fungi.

8. Powdered milk

Even though it won't be very tasty, powdered milk will last longer than fresh milk. In addition, powdered milk is easier to carry and store compared to other milks.

9. Pemmican

This non-perishable food was created by Native American tribes. Pemmican is still a favorite food for survival because it has a long-lasting source of protein. The original recipe for making this dish is to use dried venison or bull meat that is ground into a powder, and mixed with berries and fat. Pemmican can be eaten raw, boiled, or fried.

10. White vinegar

You can buy large amounts of white vinegar without worrying about wasting it. Vinegar can last forever and stay fresh. So you can make a vinegar supply in your home. Apart from being used as a food ingredient, vinegar can also be used as a household cleaning agent.
