When you look in the mirror, have you ever asked what color your eyes do you have now? Do you look like mom or dad? Or not even both? If your eye color or other physical features were not the same as what your parents had, where would that physical trait come from?

Genes are dominant and recessive, determining your physical appearance

In theory, it is estimated that there are 60,000 to 100,000 genes - formed from DNA - in the human body. All these genes come together and will form chromosomes. The chromosomes that are owned by normal healthy people are 46 chromosomes consisting of 23 chromosomes from the mother and 23 chromosomes from the father.

In the study of genetics, there are two genetic traits, namely genes that are dominant and genes that are recessive. When the genes of the father and the genes of the mother meet, the genes will unite and produce new genes. These fused genes determine your shape, color, and physical appearance.

For example, for eye color, one gets the gene for blue eye color from the father while getting the gene for the mother gives brown for the eyes, then what color will the eye color be for the child? This depends on the nature of the two genes of the father and mother, whether the gene is dominant or recessive.

Genes that are dominant are genes that usually appear more frequently in a person's body and are passed on to future generations. While genes that are recessive tend to appear rarely and will disappear within a few generations. There are 3 characteristics of genes, namely:

  • Dominant-dominant, because both genes of both parents are dominant
  • Dominant-recessive, which is one of the genes of dominant and recessive parents
  • Recessive-recessive, where the two genes obtained from parents are recessive genes

The color of the eye pupils

If your mom has black eyes, so does dad, but you have light brown eyes. Can you then conclude that you are not their child? Of course not, this can happen if your body has genes that are recessive-recessive.

In fact, it is true that dark eye color is dominant, but it is possible for a child to get a recessive-recessive gene and this is passed down from his grandmother or grandfather. Eye color is determined by how much melanin or brown pigment is in the iris. Someone who has dark eyes may actually have blue or even blue eyes, but the most dominant and dominant is the dark color. Therefore, a child who has a different eye color than his father, mother, and other siblings may have recessive genes.

Hair color and shape

Just like eye color, the shape of straight and curly hair is also determined by the genetic traits the child receives from both parents. In general, black hair is dominant compared to other colors. But like eye color, the hair color you have may not be black but the color that lies between your parents' hair colors.

It also depends on the dominant pigment in the body. Genes do not determine hair and eye color directly, but affect the melanin and pigmentation present in the body which then determines the color of a person's hair or eyes.

In addition, curly hair is also known as a dominant gene compared to straight hair or even hair that tends to be bald.

Physical characteristics

Do you have dimples on your cheeks and have thick lips? The physical form is a form that has the dominant gene trait. Other facial characteristics, such as asymmetrical eyebrows, and hair that is tapered on the forehead, are thought to be formed from dominant genes and passed on to the next generation.

How to find out which physical traits are dominant in your family?

You can estimate which physical traits are dominant or recessive in the family. Try taking a photo of your extended family and then look at the faces of each of your family members. From the photo you can see the physical characteristics that most often appear in your family, this can be considered a dominant trait and will be passed on to your future generations.
