What is Ornidazole for?

Ornidazole is a drug that fights protozoa and anaerobic bacteria. These drugs are converted into reduction products that interact with DNA to destroy the structure and helical strands of DNA, and cause inhibition of protein synthesis and cell death in susceptible organisms.

How to store Ornidazole?

This medication is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Don't freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. What is the dose of Ornidazole for adults?

Oral

  • For amoebiasis: 0.5 g twice daily for 5-10 days.
  • For amoebic dysentery: 1.5 g as a single daily dose for 3 days. Alternative for patients> 60 kg: 1 g twice daily for 3 days.
  • For giardiasis: 1-1.5 g as a single daily dose for 1-2 days.
  • For trichomoniasis: 1.5 g as a single daily dose or 0.5 g twice daily for 5 days. Use in conjunction with a sexual partner.

Intravenous

  • For severe amoebic dysentery: Initially, 0.5-1 g infusion followed by 0.5 g every 12 hours for 3-6 days.
  • For amoebic liver abscess: Initially, 0.5-1 g infusion followed by 0.5 g every 12 hours for 3-6 days.
  • For anaerobic bacterial infections: Initially, 0.5-1 g followed by 1 g daily as a single dose or in 2 divided for 5-10 days. The dose is given by infusion. Change to 500 mg orally every 12 hours as soon as possible.
  • For prophylaxis of postoperative anaerobic bacterial infections: 1 g by infusion about 30 minutes before surgery.

What is the dosage of Ornidazole for children?

Oral

  • For amoebiasis: 25 mg / kg as a single daily dose for 5-10 days.
  • For amoebic dysentery: 40 mg / kg per day.
  • For giardiasis: 30-40 mg / kg per day.
  • For trichomoniasis: 25 mg / kg as a single dose.

Intravenous

  • For amoebic dysentery weight: 20-30 mg / kg per day.
  • For amoebic liver abscess: 20-30 mg / kg per day.
  • For anaerobic bacterial infections: 10 mg / kg every 12 hours for 5-10 days.

Side effects

What side effects may occur due to Ornidazole?

Drowsiness, headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, tremors, stiffness, poor coordination, seizures, fatigue, vertigo, temporary loss of consciousness and signs of peripheral sensory or mixed nerve pain, taste disturbances, abnormal LFT, skin reactions.
