Salmon meat is healthy to eat because it contains omega-3 fatty acids, protein, B vitamins, and also antioxidants that are good for the body as a whole. But in the world of beauty, the trend of injecting or applying cream containing salmon DNA is said to be good for preventing aging and healing wounds on the skin. Is it true?
Benefits of salmon DNA for skin health
Quoted from the Huffington Post, the DNA contained in salmon sperm is believed to be beneficial for skin health and beauty.
Dr. Rachel Nazarian from the Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York later stated that there are indeed some scientific facts that support this theory.
The first is a study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2010. The study reported a cream containing 3% salmon sperm DNA plumps and moisturizes the facial skin of 90% of male participants after 12 weeks of routine application. The men's skin used to look very rough and dry. The research team found that salmon sperm DNA works to stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid (hyaluronic acid) in skin connective tissue cells.
The second piece of evidence comes from a more recent study, published in the journal Archives of Craniofacial Surgery in 2018. This study states that a cream containing DNA from salmon sperm helps burns on the skin of mice heal faster, than when applied with saline or other burn medications.
The results showed that salmon DNA cream helped accelerate wound healing by increasing blood vessel formation and improving blood flow to the skin.
Finally, according to dr. Nazarian, skincare products containing salmon DNA sperm are often recommended to be used to restore skin after certain ablative laser treatments.
So is it true that salmon DNA is beneficial for the skin?
Although salmon DNA is considered to be potentially good for the skin, evidence from more extensive research is still needed to confirm its benefits. Research to date has been limited to testing on small groups of humans, experimental animals, or skin cell cultures.
Dr. Samer Jaber, a dermatologist from Washington Square Dermatology, still doubts that the benefits of salmon DNA really work to prevent skin aging. Jaber argues that existing research only proves the benefits of salmon DNA for increasing skin elasticity, not preventing premature aging. He continued, basically the most important thing that can prevent premature aging is still won by diligently applying sunscreen to the skin.
Meanwhile, some experts argue that salmon's goodness for skin most potentially comes from its omega-3 and vitamin D content. Human skin basically has a layer of natural oils at the very top to protect itself from drying out.
Well, intake of omega 3 fatty acids is known to help skin retain moisture and stay hydrated. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to prevent collagen breakdown and skin elasticity, which can make you look younger.
Besides that, dr. Melda Isaac, a dermatologist in Washington, DC, also said that vitamin D from salmon has a photoprotective effect. This means that intake of vitamin D can help protect the skin against the negative effects of UV radiation.
The benefits of vitamin D in salmon meat are also good for growth, repair, and help protect the skin from exposure to free radicals.
