"Kerokan" is a method that is considered the most effective and practical to eliminate the disease "colds" among the Indonesian people. The part of the body that is "scraped" usually starts from the neck to the back.
It turns out that kerokan has a medical term, namely Gua Sha. Is the kerokan known to us today inspired by Gua Sha or vice versa, until now there has been no clear explanation.
What is that Gua Sha ?
Gua Sha is a traditional medicine that originated in China. Just like what we have encountered everyday, this treatment is done by scraping certain body parts. However, the tools used are not only coins.
Objects that are believed to have good energy for the body are used for this traditional medicine. Among them are jade stone, bian stone, and rose quartz stone.
In addition, it turns out that not only Indonesia is familiar with this traditional medicine, but all regions in Southeast Asia. The difference is, the medical practice is carried out safely and more carefully because it is handled by professionals who have special certificates.
The danger of scraping, especially on the neck
Different from other countries in Southeast Asia, in Indonesia this method has become a very common treatment to do. Almost all people in society do not hesitate to ask to be scraped if they feel complaints, especially when they catch a cold. When headaches are also not uncommon, those who prefer scrapings in the neck rather than taking medication.
According to one study, scrapings can relieve neck pain, not relieve headaches. This study, which was conducted in 2011, was followed by people who felt pain in their neck.
They were divided into two groups, the first group received treatment on the neck using heat therapy and the second group received technical treatment gua sha. The group that received treatment gua sha reported that they felt better than the other group.
The scrapings cause tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin to burst. So that after scraping the skin it will usually turn red. So it requires precision and special expertise that must be practiced by an expert in order to avoid unwanted risks.
However, Indonesians actually believe that the rupture of the blood vessels means that complaints will heal quickly.
Not everyone can be scraped
Everyone has different body conditions. Therefore, scrapings should be avoided for the following conditions.
1. Have a medical condition related to the skin
2. People who bleed easily
3. Have infections and wounds that have not fully healed
4. Taking blood thinners
5. Have a history of deep vein thrombosis
People who often or mostly scrapes will continue to rely on this method of treatment to cure their complaints. Too often scraping is not good for health. The risk posed can be quite large because one of the blood vessels can break.
Moreover, most Indonesian people do this treatment not based on knowledge. Better to consult the complaints you feel to the doctor. If you are still curious about being scraped, look for people with special or professional skills so that they are not dangerous.
