Actually, what is sweetened condensed milk?

Sweetened condensed milk that has been circulating in the community so far is generally used as a topping or mixture in food and beverages, some people even consume it every day and give it to their children.

In fact, unlike nutritious milk or growth milk, sweetened condensed milk contains more sugar than fat and protein which functions to help growth and increase nutritional intake.

Quoted from the website of the Indonesian Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), sweetened condensed milk is a type of milk that contains at least 8 percent milk fat and a protein content of around 6.5 percent.

Sweetened condensed milk is produced when sweetened milk is drained to half its volume (condensed). Sugar is intentionally added at the beginning of and during this condensation process as a preservative. High sugar content during the production process can increase the osmotic pressure so that some microorganisms in milk can die.

What happens when adults drink sweetened condensed milk?

Sweetened condensed milk generally contains no less than 28% milk solids and 8% milk fat. Apart from that, it also contains added sugars, dextrose, glucose, and lactose in various combinations. Not to forget, to increase its nutritional value, it is not uncommon for sweetened condensed milk to be added with vitamin D and vitamin A.

Although it also contains several vitamins and minerals, it does not mean that sweetened condensed milk can be consumed every day to help increase the nutritional intake of adults. Remember, sweetened condensed milk is not the same and is not a substitute for regular cow's milk which is more nutrient dense.

That is why adults are actually not advised to drink sweetened condensed milk every day. Given the high sugar content in sweetened condensed milk, consumption of sweetened condensed milk every day may cause weight gain and increase the risk of diabetes. The sugar content in sweetened condensed milk can contribute to excess sugar for the body.

Moreover, although generally it contains vitamin D and vitamin A, sweetened condensed milk still cannot help meet the daily nutritional needs of adults.

Sweetened condensed milk is more suitable for consumption as non-essential food or drinks or as a food complement. For example, as a coffee sweetener, as expressed by Kirana Pritasari, Director General of Public Health, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, quoted from the website of the Indonesian Ministry of Health.
