Erections normally occur when you feel stimulation. Whether it's from touching, kissing, seeing, or imagining something that teases lust. However, in some people, an erection can occur suddenly without any stimulation to the point that it even hurts. Why does someone get an erection suddenly? Come on, find out the answer below.

The cause of a sudden erection is accompanied by pain

Erections do not only occur in men but also women. In men, an erection is characterized by the tightening or erection of the penis. Meanwhile, in women, an erection makes the clitoris enlarge and harden. Both occur when blood flows into the penis or vagina, causing them to increase in size, lengthen, and become harder.

Erections can actually occur without being stimulated first with things that smell like sex. The production of large amounts of hormones by the body can also be the cause. Well, this condition is often referred to as spontaneous erection and is normal.

However, you need to be aware if a sudden erection is accompanied by pain. It could be that this condition indicates symptoms of persistent sexual arousal syndrome or persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD).

In some cases, people with PGAD will have erections for hours, days, or weeks. This condition is certainly very disturbing to daily activities.

What are the symptoms of PGAD?

Compared to men, PGAD is more common in women. Symptoms of PGAD in men are unexplained penile erection accompanied by pain. Meanwhile, in women, not only the clitoris will swell. The vagina, lips, vagina, anus, and nipples also swell along with the appearance of a strange sensation and itching.

Apart from tightening of the sex organs, several other symptoms when PGAD occurs, include:

  • Red face and neck
  • Blood pressure jumped abnormally high
  • The heart rate is very fast
  • Gasping for breath
  • Muscles all over the body feel spasm
  • The view becomes blurry

What causes a sudden erection accompanied by pain?

There are many things that cause a person to experience PGAD, such as excessive pressure on the pudendal nerve in the clitoris or problems with blood flow into and out of the penis or clitoris.

In some cases, PGAD also often occurs in people with psychiatric problems, such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar type I disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and others. In addition, PGAD can also occur in people who have recently had brain surgery, a side effect of a vasectomy procedure, or have had a stroke.

How can you relieve these symptoms?

Overcoming PGAD must be in accordance with the cause. If it is caused by mental problems, it means that the patient must take psychological treatment for the disease. Some ways to reduce the symptoms of PGAD that may be done include:

  • Masturbation techniques to orgasm to reduce symptoms. However, this method is not always effective in the long term.
  • Attending electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for PGAD in patients with bipolar disorder or anxiety disorders
  • Performing TENS or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation to relieve nerve pain.
  • Attending cognitive behavioral therapy to overcome psychiatric problems by training the patient's ability to control emotions and provide him with support.
  • Take prescription medications, such as antidepressants and clomipramine to treat obsessive compulsive disorder, lignocaine gel to numb certain areas of the body, and fluoxetine to treat panic attacks and bulimia.
