Why is vitamin B3 called the key to longevity?
Vitamin B plays an important role for the body. This substance can help growth, development and other body functions. One of them is vitamin B3 or also known as niacin. This vitamin is needed to convert fat, protein and carbohydrates from the food you eat into usable energy. Vitamin B3 also helps your body form new DNA.
If you take vitamin B3 (niacin) either through food or supplements, this vitamin will be converted into two different forms namely nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP). Both forms of vitamin B3 are capable of being powerful antioxidants that can protect you from excessive free radical damage. Then, is this what makes vitamin B3 the key to longevity?
When your body breaks down niacin into nicotinamide to produce energy, there is a molecule that plays a role in this process, an enzyme called sirtuin. Sirtuin has the ability to slow down some of the genes in your body that contribute to the aging process.
In 2013, a researcher at the University of New South Wales found an increase in the ability of mitochondria, or cell production centers, when injecting NAD into laboratory animals. The ability of the mitochondria over time will decrease and can trigger the aging process. Researchers have found that injections of NAD can increase strength and restore mitochondrial function to a "younger" form.
In the study, two year old mice were given NAD injections for one week. Well , at the end of the study week, the mice were again observed and the mice that had received the NAD injection for one week became younger as they were six months old. The age of rats aged two years according to the study is the same as the age of humans who are 60 years old. The results of this study have been published in the biological research journal, Journal Cell.
The NAD injection formula given to mice was then rearranged for human trials. If the formula works in humans, the researchers hope it will reduce the risk of diabetes, cancer, dementia, osteoporosis, arthritis, and heart disease.
How much vitamin B3 do I need?
You can get the best sources of vitamin B3 that you can find in milk, nuts, eggs, fish, beef, and chicken. When you eat foods that contain vitamin B3 or supplements, vitamin B3 will break down into NAD. However, don't expect the results to be the same as research.
Research conducted by Harvard University and South Wales University has different vitamin B3 "formulas". The daily requirement of vitamin B3 is 13 mg for women and 17 mg for men. It is not recommended that you take vitamin B3 in excess of your recommended daily intake without a doctor's supervision. Research that makes vitamin B3 the key to longevity still needs to be developed until it becomes perfect and can be used by humans.
