Gel polish or nail gel is one of the choices for women to beautify their finger nails. The advantages of gel nail polish include various colors and long lasting durability because it does not peel off easily from the nails, nor is it easily removed with acetone.
However, how to apply nail polish is unfortunately often wrong. This wrong method and treatment can make your nails damaged, brittle, and easy to break. Here are some mistakes women don't realize that can damage nails.
Mistakes that are often made when using gel polish
1. Change color of gel polish
Combination of gel polish and nail art the funny thing is indeed a favorite of women to pamper themselves. It is not uncommon for some people to change the color of gel types for a short period of time.
But unfortunately, gel polish ingredients can basically make the nail layer thin. Especially if when you remove the gel polish you do it by force, aka just scraping it off. This can make nails even more worn or thin.
According to Kristin Pulaski, a professional manicure pedicure therapist, it's good to replace or repair this type of gel nail at least once every 3 weeks. If too often, this can harm the nail bed. Your nails become flaccid and break easily in the future.
2. Use gel nail polish over time
Apart from frequently changing the color of the nails, wearing them is also not good. Why? When using nail polish, the moisture on the nails will be carried away along with the gel polish.
Well, this loss of moisture can make bacteria easily grow in the nail bed. It is recommended to use this gel nail polish for a maximum of 3 weeks. It also aims to avoid damage to nails and cuticles.
3. Remove the layer of nail polish, or scrape
Most salons charge a fortune to remove gel polish. Therefore, most people there are those who remove nail polish by removing it or by filing the nail with it buffer home alone .
Unfortunately, this can cause some of the layers of the nail to lift and the nails to become very thin. It is not recommended to remove nail polish at home. Better to go to a salon or to a nail care therapist.
The correct way to remove gel polish is to use acetone. Later the therapist will use cotton that has been soaked in acetone. After that, the cotton is placed on the nail polish that you want to remove.
Afterward, the therapist will coat the nails and cotton with foil for 15 minutes. When opened, the nail polish will become soft and the therapist will clean the nails with a manicure tool and clean water.
4. Do not use cuticle oil or cream
Healthy nails are nails that are flexible, not hard, and don't break easily. But unfortunately, cold temperatures such as in a room or in an office that uses air conditioning can make nails dry out even more.
Dry nails will dry out the cuticles too. The cuticle is the dead skin at the base of the nail whose function is to protect the nail from infection. When nails are dry due to using gel polish and using acetone, this can make the cuticle function less than optimal.
Therefore, it is recommended to use cuticle oil every day. Cuticle oil can be used whether you use gel polish or not. In addition to hydrating cuticles, this oil can make nails look shiny and healthy.
