In layman's terms, obstetricians and gynecologists (commonly abbreviated as obgyn or SpOG) are often referred to as gynecologists. But did you know that they are different? What is the difference? Check out the explanation in this article.

What is the difference between obstetrics and gynecology?

Obstetrics is a branch of medicine that specializes in pregnancy and childbirth. Meanwhile, gynecology is a branch of medicine that specifically studies female reproductive problems.

Even so, these two branches of science have a scope of work that falls into the two biggest health problems in women. Therefore, the specializations of these two branches of knowledge are combined in one skill known as Obgyn. In Indonesia, a specialist in Obestetrics & Gynecology (SpOG), or better known as a gynecologist.

What do obstetricians do?

During pregnancy, the obstetrician will perform a variety of tests, including:

  • Check for health conditions that can cause problems during pregnancy or affect the health of the baby, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, risk of infection, or genetic disorders.
  • Monitor the condition of your fetus, including routine ultrasound tests.
  • Provides advice on diet, exercise and other healthy tips to suit your needs.
  • Help you cope morning sickness , back and leg pain, and various other pregnancy complaints.
  • Addressing problems surrounding the labor process and its complications, such as bleeding during or after delivery, uterine rupture, sepsis, premature birth, placental abruption, preeclampsia, and so on.

The frequency of visits to the obstetrician usually varies from woman to woman. This is because it depends on the doctor's recommendations for your condition. However, doctors usually recommend that their patients make regular visits every trimester.

What do gynecologists do?

Many women, adults and young people, often complain of problems with their reproductive systems. Well, this is where a gynecologist can help you. A gynecologist will assist you in diagnosing reproductive health problems, examinations, and treatment.

Some of the services that can be handled include:

  • Problems associated with the vulva and vagina such as vulvovaginitis and nonmenstrual bleeding, as well as vaginal discharge.
