Have you ever felt pain because a tooth grew on your molar even though you have entered adulthood? Your wisdom teeth, however, may have just emerged.
Wisdom teeth or commonly known as third molars are the teeth that are located in the upper and lower jaw, which are the last ones to emerge. The process of wisdom tooth seed formation begins before the age of 12 and ends at about 25 years of age. It is this wisdom tooth that usually appears last, compared to the other teeth. This period of appearance then causes this tooth to be also known as wisdom teeth. What do you know about wisdom teeth?
Will everyone grow wisdom teeth?
In fact, not everyone is aware of the existence of these wisdom teeth, because only a few people feel pain when these teeth appear. Disorders of the appearance of teeth (impacted) can actually occur in other teeth, but the highest frequency is found in wisdom teeth. Some studies even reveal that 9 out of 10 people experience impacted wisdom teeth.
Generally, by that age, jaw growth has finished, so there is no longer enough room for wisdom teeth. As a result, wisdom teeth growth is less than perfect, coupled with the wrong position and direction. This condition then causes pain when the wisdom teeth appear.
When wisdom teeth grow normally into the oral cavity without obstruction, if the seeds are formed in a good position, the arch of the jaw is sufficient to accommodate the wisdom teeth, wisdom teeth can actually be very helpful and will not cause any pain at all. Especially for tearing and chewing food that tends to be hard.
How to prevent pain when wisdom teeth appear?
You can first detect the presence of your wisdom teeth by consulting your dentist before entering the period of appearance. Your doctor may order periodic X-rays to evaluate the position and growth of your wisdom teeth so that action can be taken immediately before any further problems develop.
This can be done to reduce the pain that will be felt if it turns out that your wisdom tooth has to be removed several years later. Tooth extraction will be easier to do at a young age than after adulthood. Moreover, the healing period during adulthood requires a longer time than when it was young.
Factors affecting the appearance of wisdom teeth
There are 4 wisdom teeth, each of which is located on the right, left, above and below the back of the oral cavity. However, it is estimated that about 25 percent of humans have wisdom teeth less than 4. This can happen because the 4th wisdom tooth has problems in its appearance which may be caused by:
1. Genetic problems
Disorders of the appearance of wisdom teeth can be caused by the child's parents who have a small arch with a tooth that may be relatively large.
2. The form of food consumed
Eating soft foods does not stimulate growth and development of the arch of the jaw. This is because, when chewing food that tends to be hard, the muscles in the mouth are active, so that the jaw is more stimulated to grow optimally.
3. Tooth seed is misplaced
Teeth seeds that grow in the wrong direction will also appear in the wrong position. This can inhibit the growth of wisdom teeth and potentially interfere with the growth of other teeth.
Wisdom teeth that are damaged and positioned incorrectly in their appearance can cause pain. Often times to reduce the pain, the only way is to pull it out. If the problematic wisdom tooth is not properly treated, other serious complications will arise, such as infection and the formation of a cyst.
