As the name implies, venereal disease, aka sexually transmitted diseases, is an infection that spreads through unprotected sexual intercourse which usually attacks the genital area. That is why one of the characteristics of venereal disease is a burning sensation in the vagina or penis and pain when urinating. However, venereal disease can also spread to other parts of your body. Venereal disease can even attack the eyes. How can?
What venereal diseases can affect the eyes?
Eye infection due to venereal disease can occur when vaginal fluid or semen from an infected partner gets into the eye of the other partner. This may occur when the male partner ejaculates outside or during oral sex.
Spread of the disease to the eyes can also occur when you touch your eyes with fingers that are contaminated with vaginal fluid / semen or after touching an infected genital area, without washing your hands first afterwards.
However, not all venereal diseases must attack the eyes. Some of the common venereal diseases that affect the eyes are chlamydia, gonorrhea, and herpes simplex. An eye infection due to the genital herpes virus is known as herpes simplex keratitis.
What are the characteristics of venereal disease in the eye?
The characteristics of venereal disease in the eye are generally characterized by red, swollen, and painful eyes. You may also feel itchy and experience an uncomfortable, gritty eye sensation. Not only that, the infected eye can rub when you wake up sleeping or secrete yellow, green, or even bloody discharge.
Not only physical sensations, but this infection can also cause your vision to be blurred or very sensitive to bright light. You can experience red eye on only one eye or even both. This eye disease caused by a viral or bacterial infection is known as conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is an infection, so you should be treated as early as possible to avoid spreading it to other people. This condition can also lead to blindness if not treated quickly.
What are the treatment options for conjunctivitis?
If your conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria, your doctor will prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment. You can reduce eye puffiness with a warm compress. Bacterial pink eye usually gets better within 48 hours of treatment and usually goes away within a week.
If the cause is a virus, antibiotic eye drops or ointment will not work. Therefore, the doctor will prescribe eye drops that increase eye moisture combined with warm compresses to reduce puffiness. Viral pink eye usually goes away within 1 week, but it can take longer.
How to avoid it?
Although eye infections due to venereal disease are rare, it's still better to prevent than to treat. The right prevention is to maintain cleanliness. Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes immediately after sexual intercourse. Always wash your hands properly. If you have any of the symptoms above, get your eye checked by a doctor to get the right treatment.
