Iopamidol belongs to a group of drugs called radiopaque, a contrast agent. Iopamidol contains iodine, a substance that absorbs X-rays. Radiopaque contrast agents are used to allow blood vessels, organs, and other non-bone tissue to be seen more clearly on a CT scan or other radiological examination (X-ray). Iopamidol is commonly used to help diagnose certain disorders of the heart, brain, blood vessels, and nervous system. Iopamidol can also be used for medications that are not listed in the Medication Guide.

You may be given medication to prevent certain side effects while you are receiving Iopamidol. Tell your doctor if you feel burning, pain, or swelling around the IV needle when Iopamidol is injected. Drink extra fluids before and after undergoing radiological tests. Iopamidol can cause dehydration which is dangerous to the kidneys. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding the type and amount of fluids to drink before and after the test.

Adults may need special care to avoid dehydration. Kidney function needs to be checked after receiving Iopamidol. Some people who receive Iopamidol experience no reaction 30-60 minutes after the drug is first given. The nurse will monitor you for a few moments after the injection to make sure you don't experience any unwanted side effects or delayed reactions.

This medication may cause unusual results with certain medical tests. Tell the nurse doctor that you are taking Iopamidol.
