Medicines can be packaged in various forms, one of which is a liquid form and is used by dropping it. One of the medicines in this form are nasal drops (nasal spray). However, how to use this drug should not be arbitrary. What is the correct use of nasal drops? Check out the following guide.
The function of nasal drops
Before understanding how to use nasal drops properly, it helps us to first know the function of this one drug.
People who have problems with allergies, asthma, or sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) are usually prescribed nasal drops by a doctor. This drug has many functions in the respiratory tract, such as:
- Restores nasal moisture due to dry air
- Cleanses the airways of bacteria, viruses, or allergens
- Thin thick mucus that causes blockages
How to use nose drops properly
Maybe you are confused about how to use nasal drops properly and correctly. In order not to be mistaken, see how to use the nose drops below.
1. Identify first the type of nasal drops to be used
There are two types of nasal drops, namely a pressure tube and a pump (spray) bottle. Knowing the type of medicine helps you to use it properly. The reason is, the use of these two nose drops is not the same.
2. Steps for using nasal drops
For clarity, follow the instructions for use nasal spray according to the following types.
How to use a pressure tube containing nasal drops
- Clean the nose from mucus before using the medicine. The trick, exhale from one nose alternately. Do this by pressing on one side of the nose to the right, while exhaling from the left nostril.
- Make sure the tube fits snugly into the holder. Before using the nasal drops, gently shake the medication several times.
- Keep your head upright and inhale slowly.
- Place the tip of the medication on one nose (see image above). Then, use your finger to cover the other, non-medicated nostril.
- Press down on the tube as you begin to breathe slowly through your nose. Repeat this step on the other nostril.
- Try not to sneeze or clean your nose as in the first step, after you have used the medicine.
How to use a pump bottle nasal drop
- Before using the medicine, clear your nose from mucus. Alternate exhaling from one nose. Do this by pressing on one side of the nose to the right, while exhaling from the left nostril.
- Remove the cap of the medicine and shake the bottle gently. When you first use this medication, you may need to spray the drug several times into the air until you see a fine mist.
- Then, bend your head slightly forward and inhale slowly.
- Hold the pump bottle with your thumb on the bottom. Meanwhile, the index and middle fingers are at the top of the medicine container.
- Use your finger to cover the other, non-medicated nose (see image above).
- Press the pump while you breathe slowly through your nose. Repeat this step on the other nostril.
- Try not to sneeze or clean your nose as in the first point, after you have used the medicine.
3. For an effective treatment, follow these instructions
In addition to how to use nose drops that must be correct, there are a number of things that you need to pay attention to, including:
- The effectiveness of the drug will usually be seen after you have used the drug for 1 or 2 weeks. Follow the doctor's prescription for maximum treatment.
- Make sure you breathe in through each nostril first before spraying the medicine. The goal is to avoid the drug being wasted because it goes too far into the inside of the nose. This can also cause irritation to the nose.
- Use pressure tube nasal drops properly. Do not let it drip out of your nose or into the back of your throat.
- To keep it clean, don't forget to wash the pressure tube container at least once a week. Then, store the medicine in a place that is not exposed to direct sunlight.
Stop using the drug, if you experience….
After using the medicine and you feel pain or a stinging sensation on the inside of your nose, stop using the medicine for a day or two.
Meanwhile, if a nosebleed occurs, immediately stop using nose drops. Use a cotton swab to clean the blood and rub a thin layer on the inside of the nose with petroleum jelly.
