The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) together with several medical associations are conducting clinical trials on immunomodulators in the form of herbal supplements for handling COVID-19 patients. Immunomodulators are substances that can affect the body's immune system (strengthen or suppress the immune system so it doesn't overreact).

This clinical trial was conducted on 90 COVID-19 patients at the Emergency Hospital for Handling COVID-19 at Wisma Atlet Kemayoran, Jakarta. Supplement testing is just one of hundreds of efforts scientists are currently making to fight the Coronavirus that causes COVID-19. What is the process and progress of the clinical trial of this herbal supplement in Indonesia?

Candidate for the COVID-19 herbal supplement

Currently, the immunomodulator candidate in the form of a COVID-19 herbal supplement is in the process of testing COVID-19 patients who are being treated at the Emergency Hospital for Handling COVID-19, Wisma Atlet.

"This is not a drug that kills viruses in the body, but an immunomodulator whose function is the same as a supplement as an immune system booster to help fight viruses," explained Dr. Masteria Yunovilsa Putra to Hello Sehat, Friday (7/8). Masteria is a doctor at the LIPI Biotechnology Research Center as the Immunomodulator Candidate Clinical Trial Activity Coordinator

When the body is attacked by a virus, the immune system or immune system is the first to fight the virus. A body that is sick due to a virus indicates that the resistance given by the body's immune system has lost. This is when the immunomodulator plays a role in restoring immune strength so that it can fight back against the virus.

The COVID-19 herbal immunomodulator which is in the process of clinical trials is a combination of two finished products that have been circulating in the community. Both immunomodulators have received distribution permits from the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) as standardized herbal medicines.

Masteria did not mention the trademark of the distribution, but he explained the herbal content of this COVID-19 immunomodulator candidate. First, herbal supplements with basic ingredients Cordyceps militaris that is, a type of mushroom plant that has active compounds to treat shortness of breath. Second, the supplement comes from ginger, meniran, sambiloto and sembung leaves.

"Now we want to claim it as a supplement immunomodulator for COVID-19. It's a special claim, so it must be tested, ”said Masteria.

Herbal immunomodulator clinical trial in 90 Coronavirus infection patients

Patients who were test participants were COVID-19 patients aged 18-50 years with mild symptoms and no comorbidities.

From a total of 90 participants, 72 of them have been tested in early August. Researchers said the entire series of clinical trials was completed on Saturday (15/8).

Research on the COVID-19 immunomodulator candidate has been conducted since early March by the LIPI research team, Gadjah Mada University, and PT. Kalbe Farma Tbk.

The researchers conducted a scientific study of native Indonesian herbal ingredients that have active ingredients to boost the immune system.

After determining and selecting two herbal supplement combinations, the research team selected the Wisma Athlete Emergency Hospital as the test site. This is because the inclusion criteria of patients treated there are in accordance with the test objectives.

In this clinical trial process, the research consisted of the LIPI research team, the Indonesian Traditional Medicine and Herbal Medicine Development Doctors Association (PDPOTJI), the Indonesian Lung Doctors Association (PDPI), the Ministry of Health's Research and Development Agency, and a team of doctors from the Emergency Hospital for COVID-19 Handling. Kemayoran Athlete Village.

"We hope that this immunomodulator will not only be used for COVID-19 patients but can also be circulated in the community as an immune enhancer and prevention of COVID-19," said Masteria regarding her hopes for this herbal supplement.
