Diligent breakfast will not only help you be more energetic to carry out activities. For couples who have difficulty having children, breakfast can actually help increase fertility in women - especially those with polycystic ovary syndrome, aka PCOS. How come?
Polycystic ovary syndrome causes women to be infertile
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal balance disorder that makes it difficult for women to have children. Many women with PCOS have abnormal insulin levels.
Insulin is a hormone that plays a role in helping the absorption of sugar in the body and keeping blood sugar levels balanced. If the insulin in the body cannot work properly, in the sense that the body's response to insulin decreases, blood sugar levels will increase.
When blood sugar continues to rise uncontrollably, this causes testosterone levels to increase which disrupts the menstrual cycle. If left untreated, high sugar levels can also lead to heart disease and diabetes.
Reducing insulin resistance by means of a weight loss diet can improve fertility. However, it is not an appropriate choice for women with PCOS who are thin. They should be more diligent in breakfast.
Breakfast every morning helps increase fertility in women with PCOS
Reporting from the NHS Choices, a study conducted by a joint team from the Sackelr Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University, the Institute of Biochemistry, and Food Science Nutrition at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, reports that developing a diligent breakfast habit can help increase the fertility of women who have PCOS.
These findings were concluded after observing 60 women with PCOS who were thin but in good health. They were divided into two groups with a total food intake of 1,800 calories. The first group used 980 calories for breakfast, 640 calories for lunch, and 190 calories for dinner, while the second group did the opposite.
The result, the first group experienced a decrease in testosterone by 50% and their reproductive hormones jumped up to 105 percent in 12 weeks. This allowed them to ovulate normally at the end of the study period. Meanwhile, the second group actually experienced a smaller increase in testosterone, only by 20 percent.
Reporting from Women's Health, Oren Froy, Ph.D. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem said that breakfast can lose weight, speed up the metabolism stronger, and improve insulin sensitivity for the better. These three things ultimately affect the reduction in the production of the hormone testosterone in the body. In addition, breakfast time is part of a diet schedule that affects the body's biological clock so that hormone production is better.
Actually increasing female fertility is not only with breakfast habits
There are many health benefits that can be obtained from the habit of having breakfast in the morning. However, it should be noted that the results of this breakfast habit will be in accordance with research if you improve the number of calories intake at breakfast, the routine you do, and the best food choices for the body. Expand to consume foods high in fiber, such as vegetables, fruit, nuts, and seeds at breakfast.
Increasing female fertility is also influenced by other healthy lifestyle factors, such as adequate sleep, regular exercise, avoiding / quitting smoking, and avoiding / stopping drinking alcoholic beverages.
If you have PCOS, you should first consult with your doctor to get recommendations for a healthy diet and lifestyle according to your health condition.
